Biogas consists of a mixture of methane (50-65%), carbon dioxide and other contaminants. Methane, when released into the atmosphere, has got a negative impact that is nearly 21 times greater than carbon dioxide. Hence, methane must be oxidized quickly, whilst recovering as much energy as possible. At present, the most common way of achieving methane oxidation is through biogas feed of modified natural gas engines for cogeneration purposes

However, a few more convenient alternatives for heat and power generation are also available. The bio-methane can be injected into any private or public gas networks, or it can be used as a vehicle fuel. Both these options require the raw biogas to be thoroughly cleaned through an appropriate purification process, in order for any contaminants to be removed in accordance with the final product purpose specification (bio-methane).
